Before I started this assemblage I was thinking about the travelling salesmen who would peddle their wares door to door. My Dad used to always talk about "Carter's Little Liver Pills" and I imagined that bottles of these and other "medicines" were included in their suitcases. My mind then wandered to doctors who used to make house calls. You would "call" for the doctor and he would come to you. That is what ended up inspiring this piece. Just imagine the doctor arriving to find goodness knows what going on with someone in the house. He'd likely know if a baby was due to arrive but anything else was likely a surprise. This is my entry for the Three Muses Challenge this week.

This assemblage is amazing, Heather. The traveling peddlar concept triggered a memory for me. When I was a child the "Watkins man" used to make monthly visits to our farm. Among other things, he sold all sorts of home remedies, cooking spices, vanilla, bag balm for cows' udders, and the widest array of "necessities" for farmers. I hadn't thought of the Watkins man for years! Thank you!

That's great fun. Do you think he ever washed his spoon between patients? When my Mum was a child they used to give everyone cod liver oil at school. They all stood in a line while the teacher poured out the mixture - same spoon - for all!

This piece is sooooo fun!! It brought back memories of my childhood & how the Fuller Brush man would come by the house to sell brooms or vacumns, hand brushes...he was always such a mystery to me! LOL Great job friend & thanks for the memories!! :)

I hope everyone has taken an extra minute of two to enlarge your wonderful piece because there is so much to see and all of it so interesting and beautifully put together. Thanks for the story behind it too. I can also remember my father and his Carters Little Liver Pills. In those days the patent medicines made such spurious claims and, unlike today, they got away with it! Great work, Heather.
