Theme Thursday - 4" X 4"

A dear art friend of mine suffered a loss of a family member. Her art friends wanted to comfort her in some way so they decided to assemble a 4" X 4" book for her. We sent our pieces from United States and Canada and they were put together and sent to her. Just creating this piece for her was an emotional journey because I could only imagine the pain that my friend was experiencing. This is my entry for the Theme Thursday challenge this week.

The Three Muses Challenge - Inspirational People

As I've mentioned many times before, I have always loved poetry. It appealed to me as a child because it often had a soothing rhythm and took me places in my imagination quickly and succinctly. As a student and English major I studied the "great" poets and in the course of my reading discovered both Walt Whitman and Emily Dickinson. Each has an entirely different style of writing but both have made an impact on me and I seek out their work to inspire me and move me. These are my entries for this week's The Three Muses Challenge.

Mixed Media Monday - Charming Junk

Every once in a while, we take a deep breath at work and clean out our craft storage area. Believe me, sometimes you need a shovel just to even get into it after a summer of programming with children. However, often treasure are unearthed such as this round tin with a window. It held prima flowers that had been used for a scrapbooking workshop. The flowers were transferred to a baggie and the tin brought home for contemplation. I knew that I wanted to do something "sweets" related and began collecting odds and ends from my art room and my kitchen including wax candles and cake decorations that had been left over from a birthday party. This little assemblage is the result of my scrounging and is my entry for the Mixed Media Monday challenge this week.

Think Monday, Think ATC - Kings and Queens

Marie Antoinette's image seems to be everywhere lately. I fell in love with these funky images of her from Itkupilli. They are hip, colourful and come with the funniest "accessories" such as this yellow poodle. This is my entry for the Think Monday, Think ATC challenge this week.

Saturday's Workout - Canvas Back Shrines/Shadow Boxes

This is a collaborative piece that I created with my very talented friend Val from Val's Altered HeART Journey. We each designed a background then sent it to the other person to finish. This is Val's background and my additions to it including canvas back shrines. I wanted to give the impression of vignettes, little piece of time so I hid objects in the small canvases and superimposed the PaperWhimsy image on top of each as well as skeleton leaves and pressed flowers. This is my entry for the Saturday's Workout challenge this week.

Saturday Surprise - Pets

For most of my childhood, we had a dachshund that we called "Toggle". We weren't very savvy about training her. In fact, trying to get her to catch a ball consisted of using and elastic band to tie a piece of cold meat onto the ball, showing it to her then throwing it. She would amble over to it, eat the piece of meat then continue about her business sans ball. Despite the fact that tricks weren't in her repertoire, Toggle was always there for me. I remember heading down to visit her in her basket bed so that I could lay my head on her stomach and have a good cry. She was most sympathetic and comforting and never moved a muscle. This altered tin is my ode to dogs and my entry for this week's Saturday Surprise challenge this week.

Theme Thursday - ATC

Just a quick post this morning as I'm running a titch late. It was one of those morning....a soft rain was falling as it had all night and with the windows open it was like a lullaby imploring me to just snuggle back under the covers and enjoy. Well, unfortunately my boss would likely not take that as an excuse for lateness or absence so now I'm scurrying. This is my entry for Theme Thursday this week.

Three Muses Challenge - Incredible Journey

The Three Muses Challenge theme this week is "Incredible Journey". It immediately gave me pause and I thought first about physical journeys but my mind kept returning to my artful journey. Never in a million years would I have ever thought that I would be someday keeping an art-related blog and actually calling myself an artist. I was pitiful in the subject in elementary and high school but can honestly say that I felt somewhat of a creative void in my life. I had no idea what I imagined would fill it but it was definitely there. Then I started dabbling in rubber stamping and a whole new world opened up for me. The Internet and blogging has shown me the scope of this new world and that the possibilities are endless. Every day I feel blessed that art and those who create it are such an integral part of my life and my own "incredible journey".

Crazy Amigo Challenge - Ladies

When it comes to ladies, Lina Cavalieri is one of my favourites. She was so classically beautiful and had an air of grace about her. I used her in this very contemplative photograph and imagined that she was thinking about an evening of romance filled with flowers, a fancy car, a beautiful dress.....This is my entry for the Crazy Amigo challenge this week.

Think Monday, Think ATC - The Moon

"When the moon hits your eye like a big pizza pie, that's amore...." I now have this song stuck in my head after reading the theme for the Think Monday, Think ATC challenge this week. I set out to create a piece that was mysterious and magical in keeping with the myths and mystique surrounding the moon.

Saturday Surprise - Games We Play

When I think of games I'm always reminded of evenings at the cottage. After dinner, an evening swim or a couple of hours of fishing everyone would gather around the table to play a game of euchre, UNO, Scrabble or dominoes. We'd take a break for Jiffy Pop popcorn and hot chocolate. It was always a chance to reconnect, share some stories, laughs and, of course, strategies. "Games We Play" is the theme for this week's Saturday Surprise challenge and this is my entry.

TGIF - A Piece of Heaven

Didn't you always hope as a child that you were somehow protected while you slept? I always jumped quickly into bed and tried not to dangle a hand or foot too far over the side because who knew what lurked underneath. The dark brings with it a sense of the mysterious and the frightening. This little girl is blessed to have an angel to watch over her. This is my entry for the TGIF challenge this week.

The Three Muses - Word Salad

The link between words, phrases, quotations, poems and artwork is such a natural one for me. Even as a child I found poetry to be magical. In fact, my favourite book was one that my mother had received for perfect attendance at Sunday School....Robert Louis Stevenson's "A Garden of Verses". It had beautiful watercolour illustrations and I loved being transported to the Land of Counterpane. The lovely poem I used above just described so wonderfully the way I feel when I'm in my garden. These journal pages are my entry for this weeks The Three Muses challenge.

Wednesday Stamper - Dreams

This is definitely a side of Marie Antoinette that you don't see very often!! I really adore these images that I purchased from a seller on Etsy....Itkupilli. They just inspire fantastical and energetic scenes. Okay, some may call them strange!! This is my entry for the Wednesday Stamper challenge this week.

Created ByHand Challenge - Faeries

Did you see the movie "Fairy Tale"? It is a favourite of mine because it is so beautifully filmed and captures so wonderfully the magical world that we envision when we think of fairies. A sibling of one of the little girls in the movie creates the most interesting and intricate house to give to the fairies and after it is presented we see them exploring it. It truly is an enthralling scene, one of many. This fairy from a sheet by Retro Cafe Art Gallery reminded me of "Fairy Tale". It was a delight to work with the image to create this altered journal. This is my entry for the Created By Hand challenge this week.

Crazy Amigo Challenge - Bingo!

What is it about vintage bingo cards that is so appealing? I find I'm drawn to them when I gather elements to use in collage pieces. Is it the random rows of numbers or the nostalgic feeling about them? Whatever it is, I'm obviously not alone. This is my entry for the Crazy Amigo challenge this week.

Mixed Media Monday - Play

Do you ever just start a project without a real goal in mind and let your creativity and muse take you where they will. Well, that's exactly what happened when I created this tin. I dutifully sanded and gessoed it then left it on my art table. Next I put a couple of coats of paint on it and again it sat for a while. I'd pick it up and turn it this way and that until one day I felt inspired to delve into its possibilities. The end result is much more elaborate and with far more depth than I had originally anticipated. It is so freeing to just allow oneself to play every once in a while. This is my entry for the Mixed Media Monday challenge this week.

Think Monday, Think ATC - Fly

Yes, another of my infamous child on bird vignettes, I'm afraid. I was playing around with gesso when I created this background. I like the lovely softness that it provides. This is my entry for this week's Think Monday, Think ATC challenge.

Lots to Do Challenge - Collage

This vintage photo is from my collection. They must be sisters or mother and daughter. There is such a resemblance in their features. I used beeswax and layered scrapbook papers and pieces from napkins to create the background then added pressed flowers to the warmed wax. This is my entry for the Lots to Do Challenge this week.

Saturday's Workout - Circle It

Circles seem to embrace us and give us a sense of security. Have you ever taken one of those personality tests that show you a variety of shapes and ask you to choose your favourite? I always choose the circle. This is my entry for the Saturday Workout challenge this week.

Saturday Surprise - Family

Ah family....the members shape us and influence us. They can be related via blood or chosen but either way they are important in our lives in many ways. "Family" is the theme for the Saturday Surprise challenge this week and I have the pleasure of hosting. If you feel inspired, please feel free to participate....I'd be thrilled to see your artwork.

TGIF Challenge - Red Flowers

These two images, one stamped and one a collage photo, just exude joy to me. When children laugh like this, it is so contagious that we want to join them. This is my entry for the TGIF challenge this week.

Saturday Surprise - Abstract

I am posting just under the wire for this Saturday Surprise challenge I'm afraid but I really like the theme very much. I learned this technique during an art card making course at Haliburton School of Fine Arts and was instantly hooked. Watercolour paper, food colouring, silver and gold ink, fine and course salt and plastic wrap are the ingredients and the results are fascinating.

Wednesday Stamper - Colourful

My task for these two round robin journal pages was to use all of the colours of the rainbow. I immediately reached for my encaustic waxes relishing the freedom of swirling colours of wax into a stamped background. I had collected the funky small playing cards that I used on the bottom of each and it seemed like the perfect time to use them. Both photographs are from my vintage photo collection. This is my entry for the Wednesday Stamper challenge this week.

Crazy Amigo Challenge - Sun, Sea and Beach

I always feels a tug of excitement when the beach is mentioned. I remember my parents announcing unexpectedly (because, of course, the weather had to be perfect) that we were heading to the lake. We'd happily gather towels, hats, sunglasses, books, blankets, sunscreen and music. The trip TO the lake would seem agonizingly long but once we arrived, I felt as though I was in heaven. The beautiful white sand would greet us even as we stepped out of the car and the sound of the surf beckoned us to the water. We'd stake out our spot on the beach and spend a lazy day dozing, swimming, reading and people watching. As the sun set in the sky, we would take one last stroll down the beach in the cooler air of evening then slowly walk to the car rubbing sand from our feet. Inevitably we'd carry some of that sand home with us as a reminder of a glorious day at the lake. This is my entry for the Crazy Amigo Challenge this week.

Think Monday, Think ATC - In the Garden

There is definitely lots of activity in my gardens these days....beautifully coloured flowers, bees flitting around collecting pollen, birds eating berries and the not so savoury earwigs eating leaves and generally making nuisances of themselves. This is my entry for this week's Think Monday, Think ATC challenge.

Gothic Arch Challenge - ATC Gothic Style

There is something very serene and peaceful about the gothic arch shape. I like to stray from the standard rectangle atc sometimes and find that I am inspired in new and interesting ways by doing so. I love this little angle in purple and decided to give her a wonder plume as a wand. This is my entry for the Gothic Arch challenge this week.

TGIF Challenge - Apples, Pears and Peaches

This PaperWhimsy image is a favourite of mine. I can picture this little girl bathed in summer sunlight contemplating biting into the refreshing, sweet peach that her Mom has just handed her. My mouth waters just thinking about it! This is my entry for the TGIF challenge this week.

Theme Thursday - Red and Black

One of my favourite colours to wear is red. I always find that it gives me a lift when I put it on. It has richness and passion. The same is true when red is used in artwork such as this piece. How dramatic are the red cheeks and lips on these two beautiful women? This is my entry for the Theme Thursday challenge this week.

The Three Muses - Up, Up and Away

Watching all of the nesting activity and subsequently the "training" of the baby birds that are hatched in the nests inspired these pages. I can sense the frustration and weariness of the parents as they guide their little ones around showing them how to hunt food and stay away from danger. Their babies are loud and demanding. I used funny descriptions out of a vintage bird book to describe the feelings of the parents and human babies to illustrate that the experience of humans and birds when it comes to offspring is similar. This is my entry for the Three Muses Challenge this week.
